When I receive a.doc or.docx attachment in Outlook and double click on it, Word opens it in Reading Layout (two pages side by side) instead of normal mode. Opening a document outside of Outlook opens it normally inside Word. Is this a Word issue or a Outlook issue, and how do I fix it? That is a Word option. Outlook doesn’t control how attachments are being opened.
To change this behavior and always open the message in the Print Layout; Word 2003 Open Word- Tools- Options- tab General- Allow starting in Reading Layout Word 2007 Open Word- Office Logo- Word Options- section Popular- Open e-mail attachments in Full Screen Reading view Word 2010 Open Word- File- Options- section General- Open e-mail attachments in Full Screen Reading view Word 2013 Open Word- File- Options- section General- Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view Last modified: January 7, 2014.
I scoured the Internet and Microsoft Technet and have a couple of possible solutions: 1) A workaround: Open the message with an attachment, then in the message ribbon, click 'Actions', then click 'Edit Message'. Supposedly, when you then open the attachment it will be in Edit mode. Sources: Rob de Matt, via Technet Microsoft 2) Possible solution (not verified): Menu: File Options Trust Center Trust Center Settings Attachment Handling and Check 'Turn off Attachment Preview' (also in the same Technet thread as above) Looking forward to hearing if any of these work. If option 1 works, you could add a 'Edit Message' button to the message ribbon so that it's easier to acccess.

Can I compose a message using Word then send with Outlook for Mac? Excel or PowerPoint, Apple Mail opens even though I have set Outlook as default. Note: there is another issue with read only files received from Windows, see this. Anytime you download a file and then open it in Microsoft Office, the office program will autonomously enter Protected View. In protected view you cannot make modifications to the file, only view it.
